Overview

The board is designed for one person who will play against a Chess AI. The AI’s pieces will move on their own while the player will manually make their moves and the board will detect those moves and relay them to the AI to respond.

To make the AI’s pieces seemingly move on their own, each piece has a magnet on the bottom that is manipulated by the mobile electromagnet under the board’s surface that moves from square to square through a two-axis gantry system. To detect the player’s moves and transmit them to the AI, each square has a hall-effect sensor flush under it that picks up on the presence of the magnets in each piece.
