Mission Overview

This project serves as the final project for the Olin course Principles of Integrated Engineering (PIE). Our team set out to build a full scale R2-D2 robot capable of moving via a wireless controller, rotating its head, recognizing faces using an onboard camera, and producing the iconic R2-D2 sound effects.

The primary objectives were to successfully implement all of these functionalities while maintaining the recognizable appearance of an R2 unit from Star Wars. The robot is designed purely for enjoyment, whether for cosplay and use at a convention, or as an interactive piece to showcase to others.

We successfully met all functional objectives of the project. While the majority of the structural and mechanical work was completed, the robot was not painted and the outer shell was not installed due to time constraints, which are discussed further in the reflection section of this website.
